Communicating via Blog

When we started doing the blog, I thought it would be an annoying assignment. This is because I don’t particularly like writing and especially not when I’m forced to for a class. However, the assignments were not bad. I like that everything just related back to the projects we did in class. Not only does this make it easier to write about but it also gives us a chance to really think about and reflect on what we learn in class. So I think the blog definitely accomplishes that goal of Prof K intent with adding the blog component. And of course, it is also a plus that it is an easy way to get a good portion of your grade. Although this never really occurred to me while I was writing the blog, the blog does serve as a buffer for your grades. It can help compensate for poorer test scores that are not necessarily a surefire indication of whether you know the subject matter or not (some people are just not good test-takers). So I definitely think it should remain a component of the course.

I don’t know about others, but for me, communicating here did not really extend to communication in the classroom. I think most people stick to the seats/area that they have been sitting at from the beginning. I don’t think it is entirely bad that communicating online did not translate into the classroom. In fact, I think the blog was good for this reason. It allowed people who could not/did not communicate with each other in class to be able to do so in online form. Communication is communication, no matter what form it takes. I am not sure if I will continue on this blog after this class but for the duration of the semester, it was not as bad as I thought it might have been. I enjoyed reading everyone’s blog especially the McDonald extra credit entries.

  1. i share your point of view about not communicating with people in person the same way we did online. i think thats just how the world is now. all sorts of communication are done through the computer and i think that people nowadays are losing the feel of actually going out and talking to a person face-to-face. now its not like i went and talked to the people in class (im in the same category as you) but i think its just different. i interacted more while i was in a group than talking online by commenting on their blogs and then actually talking in class.

  2. I agree with you on there being no really connection between who you blogged with and who you actually communicated in class with. What I felt was missing from the blogs was the professor's comments. It would have been nice to have a dialogue with him. It was still a creative way though to get us to think outside of a textbook.

  3. We had the same thoughts about the blogging assignment, from when he first gave the assignment to now. Who knew blogging can be so useful. Before all this, I saw blog as a place where people wrote random things and posted random pictures. I would have never gotten a blog had it been for this class.

    Communicating here can't really translate to communication in the classroom, since we aren't really given the opportunity to do so. Also, it might be odd for someone to just go up to someone and start talking about their blog. The blog seemed like a whole separate entity from the classroom.

  4. I feel the same way about how we don't talk inside the classroom. In my defense, I am horrible at recognizing people unless I've talked to them a lot inside AND outside of class.
    I also feel that communication in the classroom and communication through blogging isn't the same, but it is a form of communication that carries the same messages that guides us in learning all the different topics throughout this course.
    Though blogging was fun, I am not going to continue to do it.

  5. Communication is one of the toughest, yet most essential aspects of everyday life. I enjoyed the blogging assignment, and it definitely helped that our class was very open with each other. I did notice that many students who might not be talkative in class express themselves through the blogs in detail.

  7. As you wrote, "Communication is communication, no matter what form it takes." I believe the blog, as a way of communication, is also a good idea because it lets people express thier thoughts and ideas much deeper than just by talking to another person. In addition, it helpes to meet other people. Even though we usually stick to our seats, the blog definitely helped me, in a way, to overcome my "shyness" through writing and reading others' blogs.

  10. I had the exact feeling as you in the beginning. To be honest, I am not one who enjoys writing on a regular basis not to mention being assigned to write. However, as I continued to write these blogs, I actually found myself enjoying the whole process because it forced me to reflect on what we did in class and thinking about these fun activities brought a smile to my face.

  11. I think most of us agree with the fact that at the beginning, none of us was thrilled about blogging. But at the end, it paid off. Whether or not it helped us to increase the communication with the other classmates, like you said, "communication is communication, no matter what forms takes". I think the class group exercises did actually help us create a relationship among peers more than the blog did.

  12. It is true that it is difficult to communicate with people in class because of how big the class was. Therefore blogging really helped people interact with others without having to speak in class.
